Lo spostamento più significativo è quello che riguarda gli elettori "indipendenti" che avevano premiato il partito dell'asinello nel 2006 e nelle ultime elezioni presidenziali e invece in Virginia e in New Jersey si sono spostati in massa verso i repubblicani, anche perchè in disaccordo con l'amministrazione sulla politica sanitaria e sull'eccessiva spesa pubblica. Si trattava però in entrambi i casi di candidati repubblicani "anomali": in Virginia c'era un candidato a suo modo centrista che, come avevamo scritto qui , aveva cercato con successo di sfondare in settori tradizionalmente democratici; in New Jersey il candidato democratico era troppo legato a Wall Street mentre quello repubblicano era un po' il Di Pietro locale, diventato famoso per aver mandato in prigione molti corrotti. Senza quiete, riposo o stasi, bensì marcato da un'ossessiva e continua ricerca.
